“Glass is the most magical of all materials. It transmits light in a special way ... I'm pleased that my art appeals to so many people of all ages. As a parent and an artist, I'm especially looking forward to leaving a legacy." Dale Chihuly
We don't have Chihuly's glass (or talent) but we do agree that glass is magical!
How do I start?
- We have samples throughout the store, an idea book with lots of full color pictures, and a friendly staff to help you with ideas. Start thinking about your design and if it will be transparent or opaque or both. This will help with the next step.
- Choose your base piece or project. We have round and square bases varying from 4" to 12" they are available in clear, white, or black. We also have options in jewelry, wind chimes, nightlights, and picture frames that do not start with a base piece of glass. We will help you set up the project that you choose.
- Next is the lesson and introduction to all the tools. We show you how to score and break the glass and use the tools in the glass center. Safety glasses are provided for your protection.
- You can place up to 2 layers of glass on your base piece.
- Use a little glue to hold your project together - the kiln will do all the hard work of melting the pieces together.
- Turn your project in and we will fire it in the kiln.
Things to consider:
- Flat items - if you would like it to hang or have a hook permanently in your piece, we can show you how to put the high fire wire between 2 layers of glass so you can hang your item.
- Slumped items - for plates, bowls, candle holders - any piece that isn't completely flat - choose the mold or shape of your finished project. Keep in mind that not all molds are available in all sizes. If we have a 10" round bowl sample, we definately have a 10" mold exactly like the sample BUT we may not have the 8" or 12" style of the same mold. We can help you choose from the shapes available for the item you are creating.
- Flat items in glass are quicker to get back due to only being fired one time. Generally these are available in 5 to 7 days.
- Slumped items require 2 firings, please allow 10 days for your finished item.
